Basics of Plasma

You may know plasma as lightning but  sometimes it is referred to as the  fourth state of matter by adding energy  to gas its electrical characteristics  change the process creates free  electrons and ions among the gas atoms  these free electrons can now carry  electricity through the plasma the  cutting gas rolls between the negatively.

charged electrode and the nozzle  ionizing the gas the gas changes to  plasma as it is energized and pushed out  of the torch cutting the positively  charged workpiece the secondary gas  helps to keep the torch cool and remove  spatter this torch uses a water shield  in place of the secondary gas.

this is a  diagram showing the metal after it has  been cut the curve is the width of the  cut the bevel angle determines if the  cut is straight or at an angle when  cutting some of the metal may spatter  onto the workpiece dross is the  impurities of the metal that spider onto  the bottom of the weld piece.
